The Kisii County Health Department successfully organized the inaugural Kisii County Afya Cup, a sporting event aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being among healthcare workers. The event, held at Gusii Stadium, brought together various football teams representing healthcare institutions across the county.
The tournament featured teams from Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) FC teams A and B, nine Sub-County Hospital Football Clubs, Oasis Health FC, and LVCT FC.
The highly competitive matches showcased the talent and teamwork of healthcare professionals who, beyond their daily duties of saving lives, embraced the opportunity to enhance their physical fitness and mental resilience through sports.
In a thrilling final match, KTRH FC emerged as the winners of the tournament and were awarded a trophy in recognition of their outstanding performance. The KTRH CEO Dr. Mariita was also awarded as the most disciplined player.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor of Kisii County H.E. Elijah Obebo, who officiated the opening ceremony, emphasized the critical role of sports and wellness initiatives in ensuring healthcare workers remain physically and mentally fit.
“Healthcare is a demanding profession, and we recognize the importance of physical activities in reducing burnout and enhancing team spirit. This event is a step towards fostering a culture of wellness among our healthcare providers,” said Obebo.
Participants expressed their enthusiasm for the initiative, lauding it as a refreshing break from their routine duties. The Afya Cup, which was sponsored by Britam, Lapfund, KTRH, and the County Government of Kisii will now be an annual event.
