The concept of private wings in public hospitals in Kenya was initiated in 1991 by the Ministry of Health at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). The private wing offers the full range of inpatient and outpatient services 24/7, including laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostics.
The concept has since been replicated at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital where the practice has been successfully used to attract and retain specialists.
Private wing commonly refers to an official arrangement by which medical services are provided, on a fee-for-service basis, to inpatients and outpatients in an acute-care public hospital. This kind of arrangement is sought to improve the sustainability of services in public hospitals.
Under this arrangement, consultants who are willing to work in the private wing sign a written contract with the hospital to offer locum services. This contract dictates that specialists should be available in hospital premises for both the general and private-wing services. It ensures that quality of service in the general part should not in any way be compromised by their involvement in the private wing.
The Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital established a private wing within the hospital, referred to as the Amenity Wing.
The Amenity wing offers both outpatient and inpatient services. Currently, the Unit has a 40-bed capacity with plans underway to expand it to 100 beds. The Amenity Wing accepts NHIF and other private insurances among them MAKL, AON Minet, Old Mutual, CIC for NPS and KPS, Old Mutual, AAR, Britam, and Trident.
The hospital management has placed consultants on locum at the Amenity Wing for the sole purpose of improving their availability within the hospital, beyond their official working hours. This has enabled us to attract and retain privately insured residents who, in the past, have only been seeking healthcare services from private health facilities, where specialists are readily available, at a higher cost.
Besides the availability of consultants on a 24-hour basis, the Amenity Wing offers advanced laboratory tests among them Tumor markers, highly sensitive troponin, highly sensitive C-reactive protein, and FSH and LH levels.
We have also established a Drug Revolving Fund at the Amenity to ensure the continuous supply of medicine. Further, we have introduced various wellness packages among them the Well Man Package, Well Woman Package, Maternity Package, and Clinical Circumcision Package for boys.
Currently, the bed occupancy rate at the Amenity Wing stands at 100% with high volumes at the outpatient facilities.
