The Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) serves as a lifeline for more than 4.5 million women of reproductive age who depend on the facility for maternal services. Additionally, the hospital caters to over 50,000 mothers and children every month, making it a vital healthcare institution.

Currently, KTRH handles over 800 deliveries in a month, 40% of which require cesarean delivery.

The majority of patients rely on the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), with 90% of women benefiting from the NHIF Linda Mama Scheme. The facility’s role in providing essential healthcare services has been increasingly significant, with a growing number of mothers and children seeking care at the hospital.

The significant increase in patient numbers, particularly mothers and children, has overwhelmed the existing facilities.

The County Government of Kisii has completed the construction of a 5-storey complex dedicated Mother and Child Hospital (MCH) at the Hospital.

Operationalizing the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) unit at KTRH is a crucial step in addressing the challenges faced and realizing our vision for comprehensive healthcare for the region. Once operational, the facility is expected to serve over 500,000 mothers and children monthly drawn from 8 out of 14 counties in the Lake Region Economic Bloc that rely on KTRH for healthcare and the northern parts of Tanzania.

Expected Impact

  • Increased Access to Quality Healthcare: This initiative will increase access to quality and superior healthcare services for over 10 million people in the South Nyanza region and beyond.
  • Reduced Mother and Child Mortality: By addressing the current challenges, this collaboration will significantly reduce mother and child mortality rates in the region.
  • Minimized Referrals: With enhanced capacity and capabilities, KTRH will be able to reduce referrals to other facilities, saving both time and lives by providing timely care.
  • Increased Revenue for Sustainability: This collaboration will not only serve the immediate healthcare needs but also increase the hospital’s revenue, ensuring long-term sustainability and continuous improvement of services.
